Communications Officer – Science Feedback

We are seeking a Communications Officer to help make our content more accessible to a wider audience and to elevate the profile of Science Feedback.

Reporting directly to the President, this position is available within the scope of a 12-month project supported by the International Fact-checking Network, with potential for future projects to extend beyond this timeframe.

Job responsibilities:

Primary

  • Oversee all internal and external communications, ensuring our message is consistent and engaging.
  • Collaborate with our editorial team to enhance the pedagogical nature of our articles, notably through the development of visual or multimedia content (e.g., graphics, images, or videos) that effectively convey key messages.
  • Establish connections with the media to amplify the coverage of our work.
  • Cultivate a larger and more engaged following among our audience and supporters on social media and other communication platforms (e.g. newsletter).
    • This entails creating texts and visually compelling materials, including graphics and videos, to effectively communicate our messages and foster audience engagement.
  • Forge partnerships with influencers across various areas of interest on social media.
    • This entails engaging in dialogue to understand their values and needs.
  • Regularly monitor and analyze the performance of our content on social media platforms using reporting tools to guide the implementation of the communication strategy and make necessary adjustments.

Secondary

  • Assist in surveying our audience to understand their needs and expectations regarding the understandability, trustworthiness and usefulness of our content.
  • This may involve creating questionnaires on our website or conducting short surveys on social networks.
  • Engage with our network of volunteer scientists to enhance their involvement, potentially through participation in interviews or distribution of newsletters.
  • Support fundraising efforts to attract sustainable revenue from our audience, philanthropic sources, and grants.
  • Aid in optimizing our website for search engines.

Skills required:

  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, layout and design, professional printing/publishing skills, including ability to present scientific concepts;
  • Perfect mastery of English;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, project management and time management skills;
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media;
  • Mastery of visual creation and video editing tools (e.g. Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After effects… or equivalent, as adapted to online content creation);
  • Knowledge of SEO methods would be a plus; familiarity with collaborative work tools for communication and project planning (e.g. Slack, Notion, AirTable…) would also be appreciated.

Experience needed:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience (not including internships) in communication, science communication, community management, public relations or other relevant activities;
  • Experience communicating about scientific topics;
  • Candidates with experience managing other contributors (e.g. graphic designers, video producers…) are encouraged to apply.

Job details

  • The position is a 12-month contract (CDD) tied to a funded grant, which we will attempt to extend beyond this initial period.
  • Work location: Paris 11e, France; partial remote work is possible, with a requirement of at least 1 day per week in the office.
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with experience (45-50k€ gross salary + bonuses).
