ADFUND – ADvertisers FUNding Disinformers
The ADFUND project aims at investigating how ad money supports online misinformation in the EU and the UK, before, during and after the 2024 European elections.
Key Questions:
- Do ad platforms’ programs block misinformation sources from revenue-sharing?
- Do advertisers differ between low-credibility and high-credibility content?
- Are brand safety tools effective in avoiding ad-spending on misinformation sources?
Scope:
- Focus Areas: Advertising funds and misinformation
- Methods: The project builds on the Who Targets Me browser extension and uses Science Feedback’s Consensus Credibility Scores.
ADFUND also examines:
- Whether political and social issue ads are labeled on social media.
- Consistency of ad library data with actual ads.
- Reliability of estimating financial flows to accounts in ad-revenue programs.
Outcomes
ADFUND supports the EU’s Code of Practice on Disinformation. It will provide a comprehensive report with recommendations for adtech providers, regulators, and researchers, along with a publicly accessible interactive dashboard for data exploration.
